Most Common Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Endodontics ( root canal) is a specialised field of dentistry dedicated to maintaining the health and function of a tooth’s inner pulp. Expert endodontists are equipped to perform a range of complex procedures, such as root canal treatments and apicectomies, aimed at saving damaged teeth from extraction and alleviating pain.

Endodontic treatment involves looking after the soft inner tissue of a tooth, known as the pulp.

The most common reasons for needing endodontic treatment include tooth decay, tooth trauma, and gum disease. Symptoms that may indicate the need for root canal treatment include toothache, sensitivity too hot or cold, swelling or tenderness in the gums, and discolouration of the tooth.

Endodontic treatment is a highly effective way to save a damaged or infected tooth. Without treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of the body and lead to serious health problems. After the procedure, the patient may experience some discomfort or sensitivity, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and should subside within a few days.

At Landmark, we utilise advanced equipment for our specialist endodontic treatments, including dental microscopes for enhanced magnification and digital X-rays, ensuring precise and effective care

Seeing a specialist endodontist offers key benefits, including expertise in complex cases, advanced pain management, and higher success rates for root canal treatments. At Landmark Dental we use advanced technology for precise diagnosis and treatment, focus on preserving natural teeth, and are skilled in managing dental trauma.

This specialised care ensures better outcomes, less discomfort, and a greater likelihood of saving your natural teeth.

Endodontic treatment, commonly known as a root canal, is generally not painful due to the use of modern anaesthetics.

The procedure is designed to relieve the pain caused by infected or inflamed tooth pulp, so most patients experience a reduction in discomfort after treatment.

During the procedure, the area around the tooth is numbed, which means you should feel minimal to no pain.

Some mild soreness or sensitivity may occur after the anaesthesia wears off, but this is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and subsides within a few days.

You might need a root canal if you have severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swollen or tender gums, tooth discoloration, or pain that wakes you up at night. Visit a dentist for an evaluation if you experience these symptoms, as early treatment can help save your tooth.

A root canal procedure typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete. However, the exact time can vary depending on factors like the complexity of the tooth, the number of roots involved, and the extent of the infection. For more complex cases, or if multiple canals need treatment, a second appointment may be required. Most single-root teeth, like front teeth, take less time, while molars with multiple roots may take longer.

Patient #1: Nervous about jaw complications
"Last week I had root canal treatment from Raj. I was dreading it as I have an issue with my jaw that complicates things. Raj and his team were incredibly reassuring, they put me at ease and told me that they would take as many breaks as I needed. My fear was unfounded. I barely noticed injections and from that point on felt nothing. My treatment was completed in under 90 minutes. My tooth settled within days.

I am so pleased that my dentist referred me to Raj for more specialist treatment. I would have no hesitation in recommending this team."

Patient #2: Suffers from dental phobia
“Dr. Raj Mahendran is the most reassuring and skilled dentist I have met to date. I have always suffered from dental phobia since I was a child. Just the thought of potentially experiencing dental pain by seeing a dentist used to be enough for me to get teary.

From the end of July, I experienced severe, shooting dental pain on a pre-molar. I signed up at a private practice and was later referred to Dr. Raj as a root canal specialist. I was so anxious about having a root canal and being able to feel pain during the procedure, that when I first entered the room when I met Dr. Raj I was in tears just after he asked me how I am feeling today.

From that moment onwards, Dr. Raj was open, reassuring and explained every single step to me, checking regularly if I am OK and whether I feel any pain at all. I had the best root canal experience possible with Dr. Raj.

Both were done in less than 2 hours, I did not feel any pain, only a slight tingling sensation with the initial Lidocaine injection, that was primed with Lidocaine gel. Dr. Raj chatted all throughout the procedure which I appreciated and found helpful to concentrate on something else.

When he promised that I wouldn’t feel anything, I trusted him immediately, which made all the difference. I can confidently say the Dr. Raj has cured me of my dental phobia and I wouldn’t see any other dentist if I were to need a root canal in the future. In terms of expertise, not only is Dr. Raj academically sound (adult dentistry, paediatric dentistry, root canal specialist, persistent maxillofacial pain and laser dentistry), but is just such a pleasant dentist.

In terms of competence, I had previously seen a Romanian dentist who qualified in both medicine and dentistry, however, managed to leave the tip of an instrument in my tooth. I couldn’t have been more pleased with Dr. Raj and would recommend him to anyone, but especially those who have dental phobia or are just anxious.

Thanks again, Dr. Raj!”
